Following the Rules

“How’d you know we’d be here?” Merida asked as she and her friends stood tense and ready to fight against the pirate king Pete and his men.

He chuckled and answered “Let’s just say a little birdy told me.”

“The same little birdy you work for I take it?” Mickey insinuated “Like Lord Arawn?”

He only huffed and said “I ain’t planning to mess up like that chump. The boss wants me to deliver the girl, so I aims to please.”

Mickey stepped on front of Merida and drew his sword, pointing it at the pirate king, before saying “Then you’ll have to go through me first. And I’ve been waiting a long time to settle the score with you, Pete.”

Pete laughed at this, some of his men adding in, before he said “Fat chance, runt! Or are you afraid another one of your friends will end up biting the dust? Just like before.”

At that everyone gave an odd look to Mickey, seeing he was both angered at hurt by that remark. While Pete only chuckled a little more Mickey closed his eyes while holding back tears.

“Mickey?” Merida asked. “What’s he talking about?”

“Aww, he didn’t tell you?” Pete mocked. “Last time the twerp and I tangoed, I was trying to assassinate the queen.” Mixed expressions of surprise went through the heroes before he continued “Almost got her too. But then someone had to go and be a hero and get in the way of my sword. Isn’t that right, Mickey? That’s what happened to your pal, Goofy.”

Merida, being the only one who really knew him, gasped at the news of Goofy’s death. She hadn’t even fully realized she hadn’t seen him during her time in this world, only adding to the horrifying news. Mickey gave a more angered look towards the pirate king instead.

“You’ll pay for what you did!” Mickey announced, ready to attack.

Merida, however, stopped him and said “Wait!” She looked back to Pete and asked “Why? Why did you attack the queen?”

“What does it matter?” Mickey asked. “He nearly did and my friend gave his life to save her.”

“But it doesn’t make sense why.” Merida retorted. “He’s a pirate. Not an assassin. So what made you decide to attack her?”

Pete shrugged and answered “Well you got me there, kid. I was just following orders.” When asked who gave them to him he answered “The same person who wants to see you.”

Merida gave a small growl while stating “The Master of Worlds.” After Pete confirmed this she asked “Who is he? And what does he want with me?”

He wagged his finger at her and said “Sorry. No spilling the beans from me. Got my own secrets to keep.”

Mickey, trying to get back at him for what he’d said about Goofy, retorted “The same ones that made Peg leave you?”

Pete seemed to be very angry about that. Merida remembered Peg and the rest of Pete’s family, making her question what he’d done that made her leave him. If for nothing else it was a relief that she didn’t have to worry about them getting in the way of all this.

Pete calmed a little before saying “Since we’re on the subject of secrets, why not tell everybody here yours? How about it, Princess Merida?”

Every one of the pirates in the bar who heard that gasped at this. A look of worry went over some of the faces of the heroes, especially Merida, at this sudden revelation.

Even Hook looked at her and asked “You’re a princess?”

Suddenly Jack added in “What sort of tricky and poppycocking scheme are you playing at, lass?” He’s said this to Merida who looked confused, as did some of the others, before he continued with “If you’d have told me you were a princess, I’ve had washed me hands taking you anywhere.” He then walked up towards Pete and said “I beg your forgiveness, your royal sea nibs. I had no idea of this treachery and am happy to…”

Before he could finish Pete took a closer look and said “Wait a second. I know you. Jack Sparrow!” He then looked rather annoyed to the point of wanting to hit Jack as he said “You owe me a lot of money after that mess-up with the pirate lords.”

Giving the usual awkward look Jack said “To be fair, I had no idea you were planning to kill most of them and take over. If I had, I would’ve saved you a seat.” Seeing how Pete was still angry at him Jack then added “But I’d be willing to make it up to you. Partly by exposing some of the others, whom I had no idea they really were, in my party.”

A collective “WHAT?” came from the heroes before Jack began to sell them out.

“In fact, that girl is in fact the Queen of Arendelle. Who, I might add, has very exceptional skills should you ever need something or something cooled. Those men are actually royal naval officers. I believe your familiar with the royal musketeer turncoat. And I’m pretty sure that he’s not even really a monkey!”

He was pointing at Abu, who gave a confused noise, before Elsa shouted “You backstabber! How could you do this?”

He shrugged and answered “Sorry, love. I need to save me own skin. Which I prefer stay on my back, by the way.” Even as Aladdin and Mulan began to protest he said “None of that now, mates. Got to keep to the code after all. Rule 42 and all that, aye?”

Both of them looked confused before suddenly realizing what he meant.  The nodded before apologizing to the others and walking over to stand with Jack and Pete. Merida looked stunned by how quick they were to turn their allegiance before noticing Abu hop off Aladdin’s shoulder and seem to sneak off.

“Looks like you’re out matched, girly.” Pete stated, indicating what few were left standing with her.

“We’re not going down with a fight!” Elsa stated, looking ready fire at them.

Pete, in turn, whistled and, before anyone knew it, all the other pirates in the tavern stood and drew their sword or pointed their handguns at them. Merida and the Arendelle men drew their weapons out of reaction but knew they were more outnumbered than before.

Pete chuckled as he crossed his arms and said “Did you forget? I’m the pirate king! And everyone hails to the king around here. Am I right, boys?”

All shouted “Aye!” at this.

Jack then added his own “Aye. In fact, I say we toast to your immensity and imminent victory, your salty sea grace.” He picked up the two nearest mugs of ale and handed on to Pete, who smirked before taking it. He then turned to everyone and said “Come on, you lot. Everyone raise a glass to hail to our glorious, plumpish, and more erroneous king.”

All the other pirates, easily swayed at the prospect of taking a drink, gave agreeing grunts or nodes before picking up their glasses. But one, however, gave had a different response.

“Oye, mine’s gone!” He called and then looked over to the pirate nearest him, seeing he had an extra mug near him, before saying “You blighter!”

Without warning he punched the other man who toppled over and knocked into a few others. The drunken angry men all fell down, one of them bumping into a rather fat woman who punched him in the hose for making her spill her drink on her shirt. He fell back into another man, who fell onto another. Seeing this the band members shrugged before playing a jolly tune, adding to how chaotic and yet normal this seemed for this tavern. The entire place soon erupted into a fighting frenzy.

As Pete and his men were eventually swept up in the fighting Jack signaled to Aladdin and Mulan. Both of them attacked one of Pete’s men each, Mulan kicking one away while Aladdin stole another’s sword before pushing him into a crowd. By the time Pete saw this Jack had tipped his mug of ale up into his face so it would splash into his eyes. He then took the chance and pulled his hat down until it broke over his head before pushing him away.

Looking to the others, who were surprised by this, Jack commented “I say we best be off!”

With that everyone quickly hurried out while following Jack and the others, Mickey taking Hook by the arm and dragging him along until they were outside. Pete had noticed this and called for his men to chase after them, all needing time to push away from the fighting in order to break away.

At one point one thug had caught up and caught Elsa by the arm, she trying to smack him away to no avail and he laughing while saying “That all you got, pretty little bird? C’mon. Give me your best.”

He even stuck out his chin for her to try and hit. Thinking for a second Elsa used her powers to create a hard ice-gauntlet around her hand which she struck him right in the jaw with. The pirate toppled over on the ground with a few broken teeth falling out.

Elsa gave a quick “You asked for it.” Before running out to join the others.

The heroes all ran out of the tavern and eventually found an alleyway to hide away in once Pete and his men emerged. All of them looked around while Jack stuck his head out to see.
“What in the world was that?” Merida asked, sounding confused to the point of anger.

“Rule 42.” Aladdin explained. When asked what that meant he further explained “There’s no real rule 42. It’s our own code we use. When the captain says it, it means get ready to do something really stupid.”

Shrugging Elsa commented “I guess having a fight break out constitutes as stupid. But how did you know that would happen?”

Suddenly they heard a screech from nearby. All looked down to see Abu, who’d managed to sneak out of the tavern and find them, holding up the missing mug of ale that he’d stolen to make the pirate angry.

Aladdin gave a “Good going, Adu.” While Jack took the drink from him and guzzled down what he could.

Holding half-empty glass he said “Best rule invented, if I would say so myself. Which I did.” Before looking to everyone and saying “Right. Here’s the plan….” He then went quiet and looked to everyone before shrugging and saying “To be honest I was actually hopping someone would jump in with anything.”

“We need to get back to the ship of course.” Mulan stated.

“But there’s Pete and his boys in our way.” Aladdin pointed out.

“I can handle them.” Elsa said, showing her hands ready with more ice magic.

Merida forced her hands down and said “Hold it. I’ve got an idea.” She then whispered into Elsa’s ear, explain her plan, before the ice queen smile and nodded after Merida asked “Got it? Good.” She looked to the others and said “Mickey. Mulan. Alddain. Abu. You’re with me. Captain, you go with Elsa and the men and get Hook back to the Black Pearl. Then set sail as soon as you’re ready.”

“What?” Mickey and the others asked before he added “How are we supposed to get back on-board if the ship leave?”

“Leave that to me.” Elsa smirked before nodding to Merida.

She nodded before indicating the others to follow her into the clearing where she shouted “Oye! Fat face! You want me? Come and get me!”

Once they had Pete’s attention he and his men drew their swords and chased after them. Merida ordered for everyone to run further into Tortuga as they did, Jack and the others waiting until they were far enough away to sneak out.

“For the record, my plan involved making a makeshift catapult with not but a hammock, a fiddle player and a goat.” Jack commented to Elsa as they made their way back to the ship. After she and the others gave him an odd look he finished with “Not as difficult as you might think.”

Meanwhile Merida and the others were still running through the streets of Tortuga with Pete and his men on their heels. The princess kept looking back and counted off the heads of how many men there were, finally reaching fourteen while including Pete. She knew for her plan to work they would need to dwindle them down first.

As they ran the heroes were passing a moving cart full of barrels of ale. Seeing this Merida drew her sword and stopped just in front of it.

Mulan and Aladdin called for her to hurry before she called back “One minute. I need to give these boys a drink.”

She waited until Pete and the pirates were close enough before cutting the rope that kept the large pile of barrels in the cart together. She backed up just as they began to fall, most of them toppling over Pete’s men who rushed ahead of the others. As Merida ran to catch up with the others she looked back and saw two were stuck down by barrels while the others tried to clamor over and wound up falling or being knocked over by them, making her giggle with delight.

Merida turned the corner where Aladdin, Mickey and Mulan disappeared to but realized neither of them were around. Confused she looked around for them before two pairs of hands reached down from above and hoisted her up. She realized Mulan and Aladdin had climbed up onto the roof of one of the vending huts on the streets and sighed with relief when she knew it was them.

“Give them a drink.” Aladdin and Abu chuckled. “I get it.”

“Nice thinking there.” Mickey commented about the barrels. “Now what?”

Just as soon as Merida heard Pete and his men approaching she looked to the others and held her sword up, saying “Now we make things even.” She stood up and waited until Pete rounded the corner, he taking a moment to look around, before she called “Up here, you big bag of hot air.”

Pete growled before ordering his men to help him up to the top while Merida and the others moved to another roof to give them room. Pete and three of his men managed to get up first before Merida moved in for an attack, Mulan and Aladdin following. With that the heroes engaged them with swords clashing.

Mulan had managed to take down two of them men easily by knocking them off the side of the roof just as more started to climb up. Aladdin had done the same, only by more slippery means as he kept ducking away from any sword swings before getting behind one and pushing them over. Merida used her sword skills to handle one pirate before kicking him off when he dropped his sword, right into the next one trying to climb up. Only Mickey had continued to fight Pete one-on-one the entire time managing to hold his own against the pirate king.
However he’d soon gain the advantage and had his sword pointed right at the mouse’s throat, he grinning with victory. But it didn’t last as Abu jumped on his head and pulled his hat down over his eyes, blinding him. Mickey took the opportunity and pushed him over the side, making the large cat fall over onto his men.

After the monkey hopped onto his shoulder she said “Thanks, Abu.”

Merida looked and the Black Pearl already setting sail before calling to the others “C’mon! We’ve got to hurry.”

They nodded before following her as they hopped from one roof to the next, eventually landed further down the street. Merida looked before seeing, on the other side of town, a cliff. She pointed towards it and told them that’s where they needed to go before running off, the others following.

“Don’t tell me we’re going to jump.” Mulan suggested as they ran.

Merida only answered “Not exactly.” Before picking up the pace as Pete and his men chased them again.

********************

As the Black Pearl continued to move away from the docks and out towards the bay Captain Jack Sparrow was using his spyglass to scan Tortuga for the others.

“Anything?” Elsa asked, standing near him.

“Buildings, trees and a lot of drunken pirates.” He answered. “That’s all I can see so far.”

Mary Poppins, also nearby, spouted “How could you let the princess go off on her own?”

Elsa had looked to her and answered “She’s the one who had the plan. Besides I thought it was clear she was in charge of this whole mission.”

“She may be in charge of this grand crusade, but I’m still in charge of her safety.” Mary Poppins retorted. She then walked over to retrieve her umbrella from the deck and said “I’m not waiting. I need to find her.”

Just then Jack had said “Hold it!” as he spotted something. Once he could see the others running up towards the cliff he commented “And I thought I was the one who ran faster.”

They watched as Merida and the others eventually reached the cliff, Jack calling for the ship to redirect so they would get closer to it. Mary Poppins and Elsa watched anxiously as they could see their friends currently cornered between the drop from the cliff and Pete with his approaching men.

Above on the cliff Abu pointed out to Aladdin who in turn said “There’s the Pearl!”

“Yeah. All the way down there….” Mulan commented, looking at how high up they were from it.

They all turned just in time to see Pete and his men reached them, all surrounding them with swords or torches in their hands; which they’d used when chasing them through the jungle. The heroes had their weapons at the ready but backed up at Pete’s men surrounded them further.

“Nowhere to run now.” Pete grinned at them.

From below Mary Poppins stated “They’re trapped!”

Elsa rubbed her hands together before retorting “Not for long.”

With all her concentration Elsa began to create a giant slide made of ice. From where she stood on the ship growing all the way up towards the cliff she used her gifts to make it larger and wider as it went higher and higher.

“Please tell me you have another plan.” Aladdin said to Merida as he and the others were all backed to the very tip of the cliff’s drop.

Pete and his men laughed before he asked “What’d you think you’re gonna do? Fly your way out?”

Merida looked back, seeing Elsa’s construct, before saying “No. We’re sliding out!”

Just as the others looked back she took Aladdin by the shoulder and pushed him forward. He and Abu, who was on his shoulder, yelped as they found themselves sliding down the icy slide all the way towards the Black Pearl. Merida indicated for Mulan to go next, she nodding and jumped down before sliding in as well.

“Come on, Mickey!” she called to him, even though he seemed so intent to fight Pete. At first he didn’t respond before she called “Mickey!”

The mouse looked back to her, seeing how desperately she wanted him to hurry, before looking back to Pete. It was clear he wanted to stay and finish his fight with the pirate king, even Pete looking ready to finish as well, but then Mickey dropped his sword and gave a heavy sigh before running back and jumping down the slide.

Merida waited before saying to Pete “Tell your master if he wants me, he’ll have to come and get me!” before finally sliding down last.

Pete and his men ran to the edge and watched as all of the heroes eventually made it back on board the Black Pearl. Merida had laughed as she flew down right in after Mickey. Meanwhile Aladdin had been hopping around and rubbing his rear while complaining how cold the ride was.

Pete gave an annoyed growl before saying “C’mon, you dogs. After them!”

He and three other of his men positioned themselves before using the ice slide to follow after the heroes. Seeing this Merida looked to Elsa who, with a wave of her hands, made the ice start to crack. The slide’s crack grew larger and further up the slide until it reached where Pete and his men were. When the entire thing broke in half all of the pirates fell down into the water, some of those on the Pearl laughing and cheering at their victory.

“Enjoy the swim, your highness!” Elsa coyly called as the Pearl moved farther away.

As Pete treaded water he growled again before saying “Let’s get back to the Jolly Roger and get after them!”

“Uh….captain?” one of his men said before pointing out the water around his ship, which was at Tortuga’s docks, was frozen solid.

With that Pete began to throw a tantrum and tossed and splashed about in anger. When he was done he ordered for the men to swim back and get whatever they could to chop the ice. Meanwhile everyone on the ship laughed or cheered at their small victory.

Merida, near Elsa, looked and said “Nice work!”

The Ice Queen shrugged and said “Don’t thank me. It was your idea after all. Same for the ship too.”

Hearing that some of the others gathered around Merida and praised her, even Flynn hoisting her up and saying “You’re one heck of a strategist, kid.”

“We should have you on the ship more often.” Aladdin said before Abu added something. “Good point. Lord knows there’s so any times we could’ve used your brains to get out of a situation.”

When Merida was put down Mulan looked at her and kept her usual stern look, as if about to make a backhand remark. Instead she smiled and patted her on the shoulder, some of the others a bit relieved by this.

“For a princess you’re not as hoity-toity as like the others. I like that.” She commented before walking off to get everyone on the ship back in position to sale.

Merida thanked her before Mary Poppins walked over and, like the others, praised her with “That was brilliant thinking, princess. But, from here on out, I’m not letting you go anywhere on your own again.”

The princess sighed and agreed to her terms before asking “Where’s Hook?”

“You called, my good woman?” he answered as she looked and saw him at the wheel of the ship. As she, Mary Poppins, and Jack, all made their way up to him he said “I feel like me old self again. The wheel at my hands and the smell of the sea in the air.”

“Might not be the only thing he smells.” Jack whispered to Merida, she chuckling at this. He then asked “Alight, Hook. Give us ur bearings so we can be off for Neverland.”

Hook laughed at this before saying “There’s no bearings for Neverland, Sparrow. You can just point the blasted place out on a map. You just have to know how to get there.” When Merida asked how he pointed to the sky and asked “See that star there? The second one over on the right?” Once everyone looked and saw he finished with “We follow that all the way until daybreak.”

“That’s it?” Merida asked.

“Ah, trust me, dear. If it were that easy everyone would be looking for Neverland.” Hook retorted. “Only sometimes people don’t always like what they find.”

With that everyone turned to let Hook continuing steering, stepping to the side before Mary Poppins asked “Are you sure we can rely on him to take us?”

Jack shrugged and said “No one’s ever found their way to Neverland except our former captain here. And trust me, lots have gone missing just looking for it. If any man can get us there, it’s him.”

“I suppose we’ll just have to take your word for it.” Mary Poppins commented as she began to walk back towards the deck. “Though I dare say these are strange days when we have to put our trust in pirates.”

After seeing her walk off Jack said “Reminds me a bit of me mum. Only not less hair.” Suddenly Merida slapped him across the face, the captain rubbing his check and saying “I did not mean that as an offense. I swear.”

Merida crossed her arms and said “No, that was for nearly selling us out.” Jack gave a confused look before she suddenly hugged him and added “And this is for everything else.”

He reacted awkwardly to her hugging, giving her small taps on the back while looking around as if to hope someone would take her off of him. Eventually she let go and he just gave an awkward smile at the little gesture.

“Much obliged.” He said, in reaction to the hug. He then added “But you needn’t think too much on it, princess. I was just following me gut and going with the very first rule of the pirate code.”

“And that is…?” Merida asked.

“Chose your friends wisely.” He answered with a smirk.

Merida returned his smirk before both looked out to the still open night ocean as they continued to sail into the distance while pointed towards the second star to the right.

********************

Jafar, the Sultan of Agrabah, found himself inside an odd and darkened place after exiting through a portal that lead him here.

“Hello?” he called out, seeing he was in a large study-like room.

There was a large rug laid out on the floor. There was a large chair pointed towards a fireplace and a table sitting to the side of it. Large windows were at the other end on the wall, the curtains pulled over them to keep the place dark. There was also a large bookshelf, reaching as high as the wall itself. The place seemed a bit dusty and yet clean in certain spots, showing that someone was here.

Suddenly a voice from the chair said “Sultan Jafar. So glad you came. I was beginning to worry you wouldn’t accept the invitation.”

It took Jafar a moment to guess before saying “You? Are you the mysterious friend of Lord Arawn’s I’ve heard about?”

“I wouldn’t use the term ‘friend’, per say.” They answered. “More of….Master.”

Jafar huffed at this before saying “Well I am a Sultan. No one is master over me. Why have you called me here?”

“To bring you a warning.” The Master answered. “The princess. Merida. You remember her, don’t you? She’s working against you even as we speak. And if she’s successful, it’ll mean the end of your reign as Sultan. And possibly your own freedom.”

“How? And why?” Jafar asked. “What can one foolish girl do against me?”

“More than you think.” The Master retorted before standing.

Jafar tried to get a good look at this mysterious person but found it difficult as they were hooded and cloaked. They then walked over to the wall where something was hanging, covered by a blanket over it.

“What if I told you the world you think you know it all a lie?” they asked. “The history you believe to be is all just fabricated thanks to some of the most powerful magic in all of existence? In this world you’re a sultan. But in another, a simple street rat had managed to entrap you inside a magic lamp where you were forced into servitude for all time.”

The entire time Jafar had a disbelieving look before saying “I’d say it was nothing but rubbish. What proof do you have of this…other world?”

In response the Master pulled off the blanket, revealing the Magic Mirror, before saying “I have the truth. Which is all you’ll need.” Seeing Jafar’s reluctant look at the mirror the Master added “Don’t worry. It’s mostly harmless. But it will show you the way things are supposed to be. But that does not mean they HAVE to be this way.”

“What are you offering, exactly?” Jafar asked.

“Only the truth.” They replied. “After that I will leave you with a choice of standing with me or not. The princess is gathering her friends. I think it’s time I found some of my own.”

After a moment Jafar nodded, looking towards the mirror, before asking “What happens if I refuse?”

“After what you’ll see?” the Master asked before saying “I doubt you will.”

Jafar looked back to the mirror as it began to react. His reflection didn’t show but instead that of the face of Madame Leota. She looked to the Sultan before the Master, ordering her, made her show him the truth of the world. A great glow burst from the mirror and covered Jafar as he looked, unable to pull away as everything became clear to him.

Watching this the Master of Worlds smiled greatly at the prospect of the first of many to rally behind them in what was sure to be a coming war.
I own nothing. All material belongs to the respective owners at Disney.

This was one of those chapters where I just had fun with it being a big action chase scene. Given how long this story is I didn't want to add too many of those in, but being this is in Tortuga I couldn't resist. Speaking of, I'm sure most of you were thinking of the usual "piratey music" playing during most of the chapter but here's a link to it in case you're unfamiliar or forgot. Lord knows I was thinking of it the whole time lol. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr0-JB…

I actually looked back on the pirate codex rules and the one Jack had mentioned, the first rule about friends, is real. The Rule 42 was both something original and yet a reference to something else. I'll you to guess that lol.

Your story is still amazing, …and you keep using "they" for "it". Really, watch out for it.

Also, is there a specific reason why Madame Leota got trapped in the Mirror ? She's not much more powerful a seer than the real Spirit in the Mirror, is she ? (And speaking of which, were IS the Spirit in the Mirror ? Trapped in the Crystal Ball ?)
